"Watch this." Peter and Jake crouched just outside Olivia's door with Jake's five water bottles. "I've almost got her trained."
Olivia was lying on her bed with her back to the door. Jake leaned around the door, filled water bottle in hand, and shook it. Olivia heard the sloshing water and spun.
"JAKE I SWEAR IF YOU COME IN HERE WITH THAT I'M GOING TO THROW THIS BOOK IN YOUR FACE!"
Jake and Peter ran giggling back to Jake's room. Time passed.
Five minutes later, Olivia was on her back, holding the book above her head. Jake rolled a second empty water bottle into the room. It echoed when it hit the side of the bed. Olivia raged.
"JAKE I ALREADY TOLD YOU ONCE STAY OUT OF MY ROOM OR I'M GOING TO HAVE MOM AND DAD DRIVE YOU TO A SEEDY MOTEL AND CHAIN YOU TO THE ICE MACHINE!"
Jake and Peter hurried, laughing, back to Jake's room. Time passed.
Five minutes again, and Olivia face down, head dangling off the bed. Jake opened the fridge to get a nicely chilled water bottle. Olivia heard the noise of the opening door.
"JAKE IF YOU COME IN HERE WITH THAT COLD BOTTLE AND YOU GET IT ANYWHERE NEAR ME I'M GOING TO FEED EVERY BPA-FREE INCH OF IT TO YOU AND YOUR STUPID FRIEND!"
"She doesn't mean it," Jake told Peter.
"No, it's cool, I know." Peter replied.
Five minutes past that, Olivia lay on here side where she could see the door across the top of her book. Jake and Peter walked past, Jake tapping his fourth water bottle. Olivia snapped upright.
"JAKE I ALREADY TOLD YOU ONCE STAY OUT OF MY ROOM OR I'M GOING TO HAVE MOM AND DAD DRIVE YOU TO A SEEDY MOTEL AND CHAIN YOU TO THE ICE MACHINE!"
Jake waved Peter into his room. The two boys sat on the bed.
"Now, we just wait," said Jake.
It took ten minutes before Olivia knocked on Jake's door.
"Jake. I can't stand it. I know you have five bottles and I just can't concentrate until I figure out what's happening with the fifth one. Just go ahead and spill it on me or something, okay? Then I can dry off and get back to reading and don't have to think about you any more."
The boys said nothing. Olivia sighed and went back to her room.
Peter nodded to Jake, in appreciation. "You weren't kidding, man."
Jake shrugged. "Hey, psychology isn't so hard. It just takes a little effort is all."
