All I Want For Christmas

Why tell your mom what you want when you can show her with jumbo-sized building pieces.

Though they all agreed she was nuts, the whole family knew Michelle planned to go out on Black Friday for some early Christmas shopping, and they had found a creative way to tell her what they wanted.

Last week, when Michelle was putting away Jake's laundry, she couldn't help but notice the unusual structure he had built with his Guidecraft Magneatos set. Ever since seeing the new Spider-Man movie, Jake was obsessed with reptiles. And, by the looks of it, he was hoping that connecting the pieces together easily and securely in the form of a Komodo dragon was all the subliminal messaging it would take for him to score one in his stocking this year.

Then the day before yesterday, she had popped her head in to check on Olivia, who not-so-subtly gestured with her pencil towards a Magneatos structure Michelle assumed was a crude representation of the White House. The day after the election, Olivia had announced to the entire family that she planned to become a U.S. Senator one day, and that if she didn't get to visit D.C. before summer, her life would be ruined forever and she was just going to DIE.

Michelle wasn't the least bit surprised when she nearly tripped over Ella's Magneatos creation in the hallway this morning, since the kid's problem-solving, comprehension and social skills were way beyond her years. Still, she couldn't for the life of her figure out what the thing was supposed to be. Then she heard Jake's voice behind her:

"It's a jetpack with twin turbofan engines, hydrogen-powered rockets and wings."

"Jake, I thought you wanted a Komodo dragon? Which, by the way, I don't think ..." Michelle said as she turned around. But Jake interrupted her.

"It's not for me. It's for her," he said as he gestured at Ella, who was peeking around the corner and giggling.

She sighed and headed for the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee. She went to the fridge to get the cream, and when she closed the door, Tim was standing behind it with a big smile and an arm full of Magneatos.

"Oh Tim, not you too. Let me guess. It's a swimming pool? No. A beer trough?"

"Nope. It's a bathtub. A bubble bath, to be exact. I figured you're gonna need to wash off the crazy when you get back on Friday, so it'll be waiting for you with a big glass of wine."
