Maybe The Last Real Summer
Olivia sat by herself on the deck and snapped another piece into the big Dr. Seuss Floor Puzzle Bundle. She wasn't at all lonely. She was just somewhere else.
Her family had gone out to see an afternoon movie, and she had been invited, of course. But Olivia felt more like keeping to herself today. And anyway, Jake wanted to see something horrible with super-heroes in it. Olivia felt too old to be watching super-heroes this summer.
She was more into serious literature, like Island of the Blue Dolphins. She could see herself on the edge of a beach, making this Lorax from shells and wondering when the dogs would attack. If she told that to Jake, he would just laugh and pretend to rescue her with his "laser eyes" and make it all into a joke. It was no joke. Her daydreams were solemn.
Olivia had decided she liked doing these two Dr. Seuss puzzles because there was a clear end. She'd been thinking more and more about endings, especially after her teacher pointed out that middle school was in her future. Not this coming year, but soon, and then she would be in a whole new place. She would probably have to make new friends. What were they reading now? What did they read growing up? Did they know The Cat In The Hat on sight? Would they just laugh at her and say the things she knew were stupid?
On her daydream island, Olivia wouldn't have to worry about that, or about any superheroes. She would have things she could enjoy, like a secret library of great books or a small puppy that was kicked out from her pack. Olivia and the puppy would fit together like the corner piece and side piece… well, that was that. The puzzle was done.
Olivia lay down with her eyes closed and her face up towards the sun. In a few minutes, she would open the second box and start the next puzzle. But right now she could imagine the waves and the little barks of her only true friend, the two of them gathering fruit before the rainy season began.
