Playing Corners
"Alright Jake, hop on up."
"Awww. Do I HAVE to, Granny Sharon? I'm too old to ride in that thing!"
Michelle and Tim were at a parent-teacher conference for Ella, so Sharon was picking Jake up after school, and he was none too pleased about having to still ride in his First Years Compass Booster Seat.
"It's just so STUPID. I bet you didn't have to ride in a booster seat when you were my age!"
"No, you're right. When I was your age we didn't have seats with multi-position adjustable backs that fully supported us at all stages. Most of the times, we didn't even wear seat belts."
"You didn't?"
"No. In fact, your great-grandparents just let us kids ride around in the very back of the station wagon. And when we'd go over a big bump, we'd all bounce up as high as we could so we'd hit our heads on the roof."
"You did?"
"Uh huh. We didn't have any of this large EPS foam-padded headrest nonsense. And we certainly didn't bother with dumb things like deep side-wing protection. If we had, we wouldn't have been able to play corners."
"What's corners?"
"It's when you're sitting in the back seat of a car with a bunch of people, and when you feel yourself go around a sharp curve, you just let your body go real limp and let all your weight slam into the people sitting next to you."
"Coooool!"
"Yeah, it WAS cool. One time, a friend of mine was riding in his car with all his brothers and sisters, and they were playing corners and on one really sharp curve, they all smashed into him, only the door wasn't shut all the way and it opened up while they were driving down the highway and they all tried to grab onto him but he flew out and got hit by an oncoming car and died. Totally awesome, huh?"
"Uh …"
"I mean, I guess the dying part wasn't so awesome but for a little while he just hung on to the outside of the car while it was speeding down the highway kinda like a stunt man. How cool is THAT?"
Jake didn't say another word. He rotated the armrest, climbed up into the booster seat and buckled himself in.
