Lockdown.
It didn't take long for Olivia to figure out where Jake and Ella had hidden her diary. It also didn't take long for her to set up the Summer Infant Baby Gate. The sound of the metal locking into place was the best thing she'd heard all night... until she heard the angry calls of "Where are our shoes?"
flash flash flash flash "Oh, is there a problem? Can some little babies not get to their shoes?"
From the top of the stairs, Jake glared at his older sister playing with the shoes. Ella seemed nervous, but not worried; she'd grown used to standing behind the Summer Infant Baby Gate for quite some time now, and she knew the designated area it created would go away eventually... if she was patient. Jake, however, had no such experience. And he was beginning to get frustrated.
"Stop being so bossy, Olivia!" Jake yelled. Olivia smirked.
"But I am the boss, Jake. If I say you don't get shoes, you don't get shoes! If I say you have to stay behind that durable metal baby gate, that's exactly what you have to do! flash flash flash flash You should have stayed out of my room!"
Jake paced like a furious tiger. "What if I climb over it? Huh, Olivia? What then?"
"Oh, I doubt that, Jake. This Summer Infant Baby Gate is made to keep babies like you safely locked away. But I'll play your little game. Suppose you do. Suppose you figure out a way. Mom and Dad are due home any second. And what will they see then? Me, sitting quietly, and you, without your shoes, dangling over Ella's baby gate like some kind of parkourista. Who do you think they'll blame first, Jake? I know where I've got my money."
Jake stomped his sock on the floor as Olivia turned her back. "I'll be eating cookie dough and watching TV, Jake, because that's what grown-ups do. You stay here with Ella. Maybe Mom and Dad will let you out... some day."
Jake sat down hard, glaring through the Summer Infant Baby Gate. Ella sat down as well, right beside her older brother. They looked at each other, looked down the stairs, looked at each other again. Somehow, they each knew what the other was thinking.
This might be the battle, Olivia... but it's not the war.
