It’s not that your six-year-old doesn’t like Shelley Duvall—she just didn’t like THE SHINING

If you don’t know a kid who might like this DVD set, buy it for the John Candy completist in your life.

It’s funny how fame works. You don’t always get to choose what you’re known for. And in most cases, a person’s best known for different things by different people. Like our coworker Farley, who we know as “the IT guy,” but who, we just found out through Facebook, is better known to area drag fans as “Olympia Dudekakis.”

For a whole batch of the people who were kids in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Ringo Starr is the Mr. Conductor from “Shining Time Station,” who was also reportedly in a band at some point. Wallace Shawn is either Andre Gregory’s dinner companion or the “inconceivable!” guy from THE PRINCESS BRIDE, depending almost entirely on how old you are.

That’s show biz, right? Performers inhabit different roles, and sometimes very different indeed. But doesn’t anyone worry about the effect this might have on the children?

Consider a seven-year-old kid searching YouTube for Don Rickles clips because he loved Mr. Potato Head in TOY STORY. Several racist rants later, his childhood is shattered.

Imagine the psychic trauma that awaits a generation of young movie fans when they see L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and find out the kindly Mr. Hoggett from BABE apparently went on to a post-farming career as a corrupt, murderous police captain.

Likewise, I shudder to think what fans of SUPERBABIES: BABY GENIUSES 2 might think when they get around to renting MIDNIGHT COWBOY because Jon Voight’s in it. Although, actually, I shudder to think what SUPERBABIES fans might think about anything, ever.

So by all means, buy Shelley Duvall’s BEDTIME STORIES series for your kids on DVD. They’re fun, charming tales narrated by some of Hollywood’s most beloved stars (and Christian Slater). Just give a little thought to the future shocks you might be setting your kids up for.

Like, no matter how much they enjoy the episode Kathy Bates narrates (“Aunt Ippy’s Museum of Junk”), you’re not going to want them to follow it up with MISERY.
