At first, we were terrified.

We didn’t know where he came from, but we hoped he’d come in peace.

I’ll never forget that hot summer day. How could any of us forget? It was the day things on earth changed forever. It was the day we discovered we weren’t alone any more. I was coming into the kids’ playroom to ask Skyler why he didn’t put the milk away like I asked when I stopped dead in my tracks.

There, in the center of the room, standing just 15 inches tall, was a robot.

“Oh my!” I shouted, my hand covered my gaping mouth as I stood transfixed, not terrified per se, but enamored with the elegance of machine life. “Do you come in peace?” The robot offered no reply. Instead, it began taking steps toward me.

“NO! PLEASE, NO! I’LL DO ANYTHING!” I turned to flee but in my haste stubbed my toe against the door and fell to the ground, sobbing. An embarrassingly-long stream of snot ran down my face, mixing with the tears. “PLEASE DON’T HURT ME!”

The robot stopped. It offered no verbal reply. What it did was far more fascinating. It danced.

Of course, I thought, what more universal form of communication could there be for beings with any sort of visual acuity? “Yes, robot! I see! I shall dance your dance!” I tried my best to mimic the machine’s moves, but it was foolish to try. I should have known that even the slightest error could result in a tragic miscommunication. A right foot planted where a hip shake should be may as well be a middle finger to this dancing robot, for all I knew.

It seemed my fears were justified.

The robot paused. Its head swiveled left, then right, then back again. Oh no, I thought, it has deemed me unworthy of further communication. “Please, robot, I beg of you-” my words refused to leave my throat as I watched, terrified, as three EVA foam discs shot from the creature’s mouth and toward my face. I screamed. My inferior primate brain flooded my body with adrenaline, forcing me to leap to action and flee the house. I left my family in that house. They’re as good as gone, now, no doubt victims of the dancing machinations of that robot.

Sure, the government spooks will tell you it’s just some Robokid Radio Controlled Robot. That it’s just some sort of “toy” that kids play with. Yeah, next you’ll tell me it was a weather balloon, or swamp gas. No, I’ve seen them. With my own two eyes.

The machines dance among us.
