Stalled
You know how sometimes a person can be a complete doofus, but in the eyes of a kid they’re totally rad? That just wasn't the case with Todd.
Todd wasn’t fooling anyone, including Jake. So even when he showed up out of the blue with the super cool Jakks Pacific Fast Wheels, Jake was less than enthused.
“Hey Jake! What’s up, little dude? Hit me up top.” Todd held his hand up for a high-five, but Jake just stared at him blankly. “Aww … DEEE-NIED! Guess you don’t want to play with my new toy, huh?”
Todd was right. Jake didn’t.
“Seriously, bro. Go get some of those little cars of yours. I want to show you something cool.”
Reluctantly, Jake went inside and fished out some of his old cars from the storage bins under his bed. He hadn’t played with them for a couple years. When he came back with them, Todd secured the rear wheels of two of them into the Fast Wheels unit and immediately started doing stunts. Jake reached for the second remote control, but Todd held it above his head.
“Hold your horses there, Grabby McGrabberson. Watch how I do it first, and then we’ll go head-to-head.”
Jake stood and watched as Todd performed wheelies and 360s, raced it up and down the driveway a few times and launched it off a quarter pipe the neighborhood skater kids had built in the street. They glared at the intrusion, and one of them swatted at the car with his board, but missed.
“Hey-OH, guys! Just playin’ around. No need to get testy. Alright Jake, ready to race?” But no sooner had Todd handed him the second remote, he snatched it back.
The neighbor kid was out for a walk with his 20-year-old babysitter, and Todd decided that running the car repeatedly into the back of her heels was a good way to break the ice. He tried redeeming himself by challenging the kid to a race. Jake just shook his head and smiled as he walked back inside.
What he knew that Todd didn’t was that the 8-minute charge was just about up on the one remote. So halfway through, it died, which made Todd look like a jerk who had rigged a race against a kid.
“Smooth, Uncle Todd. Real smooth."
