With those words, Mayor Nelson Mencer today announced a public-private partnership to build a new arena to house a prospective bug-fighting team.
Artist’s renderings of the 11.75” x 11.75” facility indicated it would feature eight irregularly-placed partitions to divide the arena into a maze of passages, doorways, and corners. The plan does not include the luxury boxes sought by the owners of the Portsburg Buzz before their move to Tulsa in 2008.
Critics say that the arena is too expensive at a time when Portsburg has other priorities. “It’s the wrong plan at the wrong time for the wrong reasons,” said Councilwoman Heather Franklin, who also expressed skepticism about the arena’s purported 33-cent price tag.
“That figure doesn’t even include shipping,” Franklin said.
Franklin also pointed out that the plan lacks sufficient parking, includes land that has not yet been acquired from private owners, and that the NRBFL has not promised Portsburg an expansion team.
But Mayor Mencer said the importance of robotic bug-fighting to Portsburg made it worth moving ahead with the plan even though all the details had not yet been worked out.
“This announcement shows the world that Portsburg is committed to being a major-league city,” he said. “I look forward to a day not too far in the future when I can cheer on our very own robotic bug-fighting team right here in Mencer Arena.”
He added, “Or whatever we wind up calling it. Just throwing that idea out there.”
