We loved the bumbo. We used it from about 4mo-7mo. I got one from my baby shower, thankfully. I wouldn't purchase this item new. Too expensive, especially for only using it 3-4 months. I would suggest buying them on craigslist or other garage sale type pages.
Also, like others said. The leg holes aren't that big. My little girl had some chunky legs and we had to have 2 ppl to get her out of it.

Love Bumbos! I'd buy one if I didn't already have one. Just don't be an brainiac parent and leave your kid unattended in one on top of a table.

My daughter hated sitting in this. (And I got it for even cheaper, tray included, on ebay) So it really never got any use. And a lot of other mothers I know complained that their babies don't even fit into it because the leg openings are too small.

"You can!"

YOU CAN NOT. :-)

Baby equipment is designed to become obsolete to the user. The Bumbo is not a securing device. Once they're strong enough to tip, that's it.

Same with with cribs; if your kid can climb out, they should have been in a bed a month ago. You want a fall hazard, THAT's a fall hazard - but how many people have you known that kept their kids in cribs long after they could climb out?

I loved this for my daughter when she was young. The only reason this was recalled is because parents don't care enough about their children to read then directions or they don't think it applies to them and keep it on the floor. I've see so many people take pictures of their kids in these while they're on a bed. These are the same parents who run out and scream 'lawsuit'.

I'd never feel comfortable using one of these. My baby's 2 months old, but already arches her back and throws herself around, and has been doing so the instant she got control over her head and neck. Add that to hardwood floors in the living room, and this seat is a bad idea waiting to happen for us, seat belt or no. I'd rather she build up the strength to sit in her own time using softer supports such as my nursing pillow.

We were given one as a present for my now 3.5 year old. I don't recall how early he started sitting in it, but my 4 month old has sat in it at times, starting at maybe 2.5 months. Of course, she could hold her head up pretty well at a month. We found the best use was after my son refused to sit in his high chair anymore. We used the Bumbo on a regular kitchen chair as a means of keeping him immobile. With the way the legs squeeze in, getting out of it wasn't easy and allowed us to eat as well. We have the tray too and I know my wife has used it with him, but I don't recall being home when it happened. I highly recommend getting one of these for your little one.

(My son will still pull it out and sit in it, but he's got skinny little legs.)

Oddly, my son only climbed out of his crib once. I guess when he hit the floor butt first, he realized it wasn't a good idea. We had to force him into a bed by disassembling his crib.

ivegotayen wrote:If you have a giant baby, or if your regular sized baby has a giant rear end and/or thighs, the Bumbo may not be for you.

We had a giant baby who had a giant bahunkus, and he didn't fit in the Bumbo.

I'm 5'2" and a size 0, and my husband is 5'5", and yet our kid was in the 90+ percentile for height and weight his first year, so if you're buying this pre-baby, don't assume you'll have a little squirt, because you're little.

I'd suggest waiting on things like Bumbos until your baby is born, and you know more what you're in for.

I completely agree. Our child was 8 lbs 12 oz and she only sat in this seat about 5 times (while we were sitting with her) before she wouldn't fit in it any more.

I got one of these for my niece when she was too young to sit up by herself, but hated to eat reclined in her bouncy seat. Yes we put this on the table, but she was never left alone, and it was placed where she couldn't scooch off the table. She loved the chance to sit up, and my SIL loved not having to hold her to feed her.

As a previous poster said, if your kid is throwing her/his head back while sitting in this seat, that's the sign that you need a different kind of chair or cushion. As soon as a kid can sit on their own, pass this on to the next pair of stressed parents.

I know a lot of people say that theirs were fine and as long as you watch your child in it etc etc, but even with the straps (which are basically aftermarket add-ons) it is too much of a risk for us. I really like the seat we bought (Mamas & Papas brand)-it has a really nice wide bottom and the leg holes are decent sized, and I've heard plenty of complaints about the Bumbo's small leg holes.

I used this for my first two kids and did not experience any issue with it. Not even a close call. They used it from about 4 months to 10 months. I used it for feeding time and a little bit for sitting in the living room. By the time they are 10 months old their thighs no longer fit in the leg holes. I honestly don't see how this could lead to any trouble, the seat is a pretty 1diot proof concept and if you are leaving your child in a seat for too long unattended or once they are too big you need to relook at what you are doing with your infant.

Someone gave us one of these, our baby's legs would never fit through the small openings, and our baby was not chubby.

worldofjohnboy wrote:Seriously, steer clear of this one... and not because of the "recall," simply because of the lack of features! My wife and I had a Bumbo and traded it for a bebePOD within the first month of use.

Main reasons: The Bumbo has very small leg openings (for big babies, this is important), and the lack of any "stock" straps on the Bumbo. We had a very agile baby and used the Bumbo as directed, yet she still almost threw herself out of it! The retrofit kit helps, but still shows Bumbo's lack of foresight.

if your kid is strong enough to wiggle out of this, they do not belong in the seat. Simple. Don't tell people not to buy it because your kid was bigger and stronger.

I used a BUMBO with both of my daughters, now 2 and 1, and I never had an issue with it. When they became big enough to thrust out of the leg holes, the bumbo went away. At that point they were big enough to sit up on their own.

BUMBOs are 100% safe when used properly and not used as a babysitter.

Both my daughters loved their Bumbo seat.

Both of my daughters were also born 9+ lbs. and neither had a problem fitting into the seat (until they were an age that they no longer needed it).

I purchased two of these before my oldest grandkids, that just turned six this summer, were born. As siblings were added I purchased the trays. So six grandkids have used these seats with no problems. Yes, these have been recalled and require the strap. As with any baby gear parents need to use common sense and monitor the baby.

My child HATED the Bumbo. I was never more grateful that we tried it out and were able to return it.

That being said, I know lots of kids that liked it.

Purpose of this post....try before you buy or make sure you can return it!

I have to say, the recall was mostly due to stupidity. Fractured skulls were NOT from parents putting their kids on the floor. It was from parents putting their kids on a table or chair or bed. Stupid idea. Stupid. Did I mention stupid?

Anyway, my daughter only liked the bumbo seat (pre straps, but with a tray) from 3-5 months. Then she wanted to wriggle around too much so we did a Boppy pillow. Big fan of the Boppy! If you take two Boppys it provides roughly the same back support as the Bumbo but without the "risk" or "safety concerns." Then as they get better at sitting you go down to one. My daycare does this with all the infants.

On the other hand, I've found that the Bumbo tends to be a bigger success with second and third children based on friends' and family's experiences. I guess because you can't hold them as often or something. I don't know. I only have the one so far so I can't say.

All I can say is that we have used the bumbo since our daughter could hold her head up. She is now almost 5 months and has started to lean in it. This is the end of the Bumbo for us.

Most accidents happen because the baby has outgrown it or based on parents not following directions.

Next thing you know people will blame the design for those little bathers for the baby the one that folds in half and has a tendency to let the baby fall through... Oh wait that is because parents were using it as something to carry their baby on and not in the tub.

A) My "kid" was literally 3 weeks old when she nearly kicked herself out of it. Though abnormal for that age, my point was that the shelf life for a Bumbo is significantly reduced because of the limitations on features. Once we switched to the bebePOD, we could use it on the floor as a baby chair/sit trainer, or strapped to a chair as a booster/high chair. My daughter is now 15 months old and still uses her bebePOD, I wouldn't be saying that with a Bumbo.

B) My child was a skinny-minnie (25th %ile) and fit in her Bumbo. My nieces and nephews all had "chunky" legs (50-75th %ile) and could not fit in the Bumbo. It is a fair assessment that many children will not fit in the Bumbo because of the legholes.

My only question to those that simply LOVE their Bumbo: Why not get a Bumbo that will last more than a few months for about the same price? Just saying...

"Every man dies... not every man truly lives." -William Wallace (from the movie Braveheart)

Just got mine in the mail today but it seems to be missing the play tray. Title clearly states that it comes with the play tray: "Bumbo Floor Seat w/ Play Tray."

Anybody else get theirs yet? How was the play tray packaged? Was it in the same hexagonal box as the Bumbo or in a separate box? Maybe I'm somehow completely overlooking it somehow?

The safety belt repair kit was inside but that was it.
