I was just going to say that. Recalled because parents did not watch their kids once they were in the Bumbo.

Good job reading the description before posting

From the product description if you click read more...

On August 15, 2012, The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Bumbo International announced a voluntary recall of Bumbo Baby Seats to provide a free repair kit with a restraint belt and a warning sticker emphasizing that the seat should be used on the floor only. Our sale includes this repair kit provided directly from Bumbo International. Do not use the Bumbo Baby Seat until the restraint belt and new warning sticker have been properly added to your seat.

My son has a Bumbo seat, his is without the tray. He loves it. It is perfect for special needs children and we paid a lot more for it without the tray than it is here on kids woot.

Seriously, steer clear of this one... and not because of the "recall," simply because of the lack of features! My wife and I had a Bumbo and traded it for a bebePOD within the first month of use.

Main reasons: The Bumbo has very small leg openings (for big babies, this is important), and the lack of any "stock" straps on the Bumbo. We had a very agile baby and used the Bumbo as directed, yet she still almost threw herself out of it! The retrofit kit helps, but still shows Bumbo's lack of foresight.

wow...bad cess woot. i remember seeing the recall on this. For them to stick on a "DIY" strap and a bloody warning sticker was pretty bad form to begin with.
reputable companies fix their own mistakes after a few babies have a skull fracture.

fixed or not, too soon. way too soon.

. . . and that's why it now contains the strap that is listed in the write, in the features, in the specs, and in the picture.

Alright, alright.... but I never put my baby in any danger. I put her in the bumbo on two different types of flooring; wood and carpet. My daughter tipped over and hurt herself right in front of me. It happened so fast I was unable to stop it from happening. The reason why I don't like the restraint idea is because parents are going to use it and their kids will fall and be stuck to the bumbo and could get much more hurt than before. I took my bumbo back and will never ever ever recommend one to even my worst enemy.

One plus... my daughter learned to sit up on her own in 5 days of starting to sit in the bumbo.

My 5 month old likes to sit in his Bumbo and see his world from a different vantage point. He is not quite able to sit up on his own, but has solid neck control. So
this adds some variety to the laying on the back or tummy time views.

This is a pretty good price as you also get the tray.

We have one of these with the tray, that we bought right before the recall. (Ordered the strap kit, just in case.) Like anything you use around a baby, common sense and a watchful eye are important.
ETA: not implying that those who have babies who got hurt were not watching them close enough.

To respond to all of you stating that the strap comes with this one, I edited my original post, and yes, it's an improvement, but the bebePOD's straps go through the body of the seat rather than essentially "snapping" on like the recent retrofitted kit does.

Also, the bebePOD has two additional straps that allow you to attach it to a chair and use as a booster seat. Seriously, it's worth the extra ~$15.

Well, we loved our Bumbo. We got it with the tray back in the dark ages (2007) before any of the recalls. It was great. My son was very active and he did manage to twist out once, but he was on carpet and was not hurt - not even upset. Probably just glad to be free. we used it when we'd go to parks and have picnics - a safe place to eat that keeps the kid from eating mulch and bugs, while also letting me use both of my hands to eat my own lunch. Great product.

I used a Bumbo (without straps) with all 3 of my kids. I was always sitting next to them, and they were all safe. It helped them learn to sit up, and they always enjoyed sitting in it to gain a different perspective.

When I first heard about the complaints (wasn't aware of recall unsure how I missed that) I thought exactly this same thing. Then, one day very recently, my five month old was sitting in the bumbo, my toddler was running around the room. I was right with them both, but if I had been inches farther from baby girl she'd have wound up backwards headfirst on the floor.in a moment's time she went from playing to arching her back nearly threw herself out. I barely caught her on time and if I had glanced at my toddler I'd have missed catching her.

Wow. I am really surprised that woot is offering these. I guess technically they are now compliant, but I still don't see them as safe.
Also, I usually see your snarky write ups as hilarious. However, you are basically making satire of the fact that babies have fractured their skulls using this product. NOT cool. My husband & I have ordered from woot before, but today is really making me rethink supporting your company.

..exactly...these arent a 'toss the kid in and leave type of item'... when the kids are at the age to use these, you should always be close. The whole recall thing seemed more based on bad parenting than the item imo. I used it raising 2 kids and had no problem....sure the kids wiggled out and tipped them sometimes, but I was right there to twist them back in or keep them from falling. It's a baby seat, not a short term baby sitter.

I'll just say this: I won't say that we never would have survived our twins' first year or so without a Bumbo. However, I will say it was certainly one of the most important tools we had in dealing with our kids at that phase. We just bought one from Craigslist or eBay (and sold it within hours the same way) but it was fantastic.

Just don't be stupid with it. The recall doesn't bother me at all. You don't recall a dining room table just because some parent was dumb enough to leave their 18 month old child on top without supervision do you? Why does adding a Bumbo into the mix change that?

Wow. Way to show intelligence. Research before typing next time. NOTE the hilarious description in regards to the recall. There was nothing wrong with the chair. It was the "bumbo" parents putting them up on the counter and letting the kids rock out in them. Gravity happens.

i, actually, thought they were making fun of the helicopter parents that can't think for themselves, do too much "reading" and are too much "by the book". Whilst getting the message out on how this item is to be safely used.

We loved our Bumbo & tray. Bought it on Craigslist for about a tenner less than this. Sold it for same. Best non-investment. My daughter loved sitting in it and playing with her rattle and nomming on puffs when she was itty.

Bumbos are amazing. Back in the day, I used them without a strap... would you believe it, my kid never fell out!

But he sure did poke himself with a crayon! Recall all the crayons!

We used a Bumbo with the tray. It really does help with sitting up. My kids never fell out of their Bumbo because their legs would barely fit!

However, they did turn them over while trapped by their fat little legs! We always used them right in the floor, so it wasn't a big deal, but the straps wouldn't have helped and smacking a kitchen floor from the sitting position still wasn't pleasant on the couple of occasions it did happen.

If you have a giant baby, or if your regular sized baby has a giant rear end and/or thighs, the Bumbo may not be for you.

We had a giant baby who had a giant bahunkus, and he didn't fit in the Bumbo.

I'm 5'2" and a size 0, and my husband is 5'5", and yet our kid was in the 90+ percentile for height and weight his first year, so if you're buying this pre-baby, don't assume you'll have a little squirt, because you're little.

I'd suggest waiting on things like Bumbos until your baby is born, and you know more what you're in for.

I used two without straps with my twins, who are now 18 months old. Yes, your child can arch his back and get out when they get coordinated/old enough. When this happened with my twins, yes, they fell out (on the floor), but they were also able to crawl by then. They thought it was a hilarious game. And that's when they stopped using the seats. If a child is old enough and strong enough to fling himself out of a Bumbo, that's probably when he should stop using it.

I, for one, LOVED my Bumbo seat for both of my boys. It was great for the stage where they were aware enough to want see what was going on, but couldn't sit up themselves. It even made a great travel high chair early on.

To address some concerns of previous posts: 1) My boys were both big (tall and long) babies. We still got lots of use even though chubby thighs don't slip right in and out. That was only an issue toward the end of it's use, and we only had to squish the foam out of the way with our hands to get him out.

2) I never once was worried that my baby would fall out of the Bumbo, and neither one did. When a baby (even a big baby) is arching his/her back to the point he might fall out, he's probably to big and strong for it, and would be better off sitting in a curved nursing pillow. If a young baby is arching his/her back, that probably means s/he hates it, and I wouldn't force my baby to play in a toy he hated.

One con, we had the tray for the second baby, and never really figured out an easy way to attach it. We couldn't get the baby in if the tray was on, but couldn't get the tray on if the baby was already in (maybe we needed to read the directions).

We would absolutely use our Bumbo if another baby would come along (even without the warning sticker and strap).

We used a bumbo with our first kid, the posts about the leg holes being too tight for fat baby thighs is exactly why we got rid of it. Our daughter was too big. Up until that point though, she loved it.

Now we have a similar product for our son (10 wks old) called the summerseat. Overall it's better but not without it's faults. I think the tray design is stupid compared to the bumbo. And it's more expensive. But the base is far larger, I don't foresee a kid tipping the summer seat over, and it has an insert so when your kids legs get too fat you can remove the insert and continue to use it. It also converts to a booster seat in the future, straps included to strap it to a chair.

We used the Bumbo for both my little boy, and then three years later for my little girl. We absolutely loved it.

I look at this recent recall no differently than the one 7 or 8 years back that required Bumbo to put a giant notice that tells parents not to use on an elevated surface. If you need to be told that...

So can I use this to place my baby on top of a ladder, or book shelf?

wlknlight

My news station did a piece on these chairs and the recall. Doctors and safety experts both agreed they are a bad idea even with the restraint. Babies can still rock these and fracture their skull on hard surfaces. My husband and I use our million purpose Boppy instead. It provides the same support, and the worse that can happen is a back bend if they go over the pillow or laying on their back if they slide down.

For what it's worth - These seats perform directly as intenteded, without the strap OR WARNING Label (Surprise), just fine. It's pretty simple.

Use these chairs until your child becomes mobile, and don't ever sit your child in anything high off the ground. Follow the pretty simple rules, and you'll be fine.

If you insist on using it longer, it now comes with a strap so your concerns are eased again.

I've used it with two kids, without the recall straps, and never had a complaint. They loved it. They sat on the floor in them, like everyone else sits on the floor in their chairs.

Great product.

We just went to Babies R Us to get one (it was in their sales flyer) and it was recalled from all their stores and Amazon for being unsafe. They said the company is working to fix the safety issues. We ended up getting the other seat they had-from Mamas & Papas and we like it much better-it has a much wider base than the Bumbo, it grows with your child and the tray was included.
Even at this price I wouldn't buy this due to the safety concerns.

I have no problems with the safety recall or anything else. If you keep them on the floor and stay with them, even if they topple over it's not a big deal.

However, two problems I've found with the Bumbo. Our friend's kid, who has chunkier legs, barely fit in this for a few days before almost getting stuck and being very uncomfortable. Also, our son wasn't a fan. The contour is weird and he just kept trying to wriggle back and forth and/or climb out the side. We tried in various situations and places and times and he just wasn't having it.

Luckily we got it for $8 at a consignment sale. For something like this, definitely look for a local used clothing store or consignment if possible.

This. By the time my 90+ percentile kid had the head control for this he didn't fit.

It's funny how negative the comments are here, though; a year and a half ago when I bought mine, everyone I knew considered a Bumbo an absolute necessity, and I was the lone voice in the wilderness that had a poor experience.

We had these for our twins and they were great when they were learning to sit up. They liked to be able to look around (and at each other) and play with toys instead of being stuck on the floor all the time. We didn't have the tray.
My brother's daughter was too chunky to use it. And our skinny spider monkey twin did squirm out of it once, so leg size can be an issue. I don't believe the strap is necessary if you are in the room watching your child. Ours was given to us second hand and I do see them on craig's list fairly often for a similar price.

We had the same problem with the leg holes. Our baby is just big for his age (6 months old but wearing 9 and sometimes 12 mo. clothes) and the only way we could get him into the Bumbo was to cram his chunky little thighs into the slots.

Didn't look comfy so we returned it. If you have a baby with normal sized thighs it's probably fine though.

Ditto, We used a pre-strap and pre-tray bumbo with all three of our boys with zero problems. By the time they were in danger of throwing themselves out of the Bumbo they were ready to be moved out of it anyway. The Bumbo is a great invention, the CPSC over-reacted by far on this one. When can we just expect personal responsibility from the parents rather than blaming the chair?

My kiddo was a chunky monkey and was still able to fit in her bumbo that I got off Craigslist. We loved it and she loved sitting in it and passing her puffs to the carb fiend cat. We stopped using it when she started crawling - about 13 months....

Good times were had by all.
