We've had a good run of haiku over this last month, but with the end of May, comes the end of haiku time for now. We shall put our dictionaries aside, look dangerously into the summer sun, and amuse ourselves (and each other) in other ways.

In case you're new and just dropping in, or even forgot some of our fine creativity during May, let's revisit the best of the best to inspire you!

First, charleneely dazzled us with Star-ku. Next, Xexus solved my lunch woes with sushi haiku. Although music proved to be a daunting challenge for many, no1 showed much dedication in making it work... with a bit of practice.

This week, as promised, no1 has helped with the theme (which means no1, you can't win, sorry about that ;).

We've got a long weekend coming up so we have not one, but two themes for you to contemplate your creative energies on.

TOPIC ONE: FUN IN THE SUN (tjschaeffer, lichme)
Tell us what you're planning, or what you've done to celebrate this upcoming three day weekend (for many of us). BBQs? Beaches? Shopping? The cool indoors of the theater to see the Avengers (finally)? Let us know.

TOPIC TWO: MILITARY SALUTE (thanks codex and lichme!)
As Memorial Day is designed as a serious holiday, this category is to nod to our heroes in the military. (Please don't start any political debates, you have two categories here. ;)

So now on with the questions.
inkycatz, can you tell me about haiku one last time?
Traditional haiku is comprised of seventeen syllables in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 respectively.

Do I have to write something for both?
Absolutely not.

How long do I have? I'll be out for the weekend!
One, good for you - I will be too! Second, Wednesday, May 30 is the deadline. That gives you some time to get back from your weekend and post on Tuesday!

Honor the soldiers
who suffer the scars of war
while praying for peace.

A message of long delays?
A message of hope?

Relax, people! It's not like

To take flight aloft
To leave gravity behind
is gratifying

What a way to wrap up spring and head into summer!

Excellent job, everyone, although some of you I feel the need to call out your excellence a little more than others.

lichme - you rocked this! Awesomeness on not just one, but two themes!

tjschaeffer, you made me long for the sunlight to return, as well as fondly laugh in remembrance of all the lightly clad people I saw this weekend who are undoubtedly regretting those fashion choices now.

codex, as I am a former military youngling, your haiku touched hearts.

As summer sneaks in and plants an icy drink and grilled dish into our minds, I say "stay tuned" for summer fun yet to come!

No reruns here, that's for sure! ;)

As a person with a ghostly complexion, I can safely say that one need not be lightly clad to feel the sun's wraith. I've been known to get sunburn while wearing sunblock and sitting in the shade.
