I found this so-so video review. It's alright I guess.

I was going to ask what makes this better than symas for ~20 dollars. Then I watched the videos, I am considering buying one to see how these bad boys look glowing in the dark with the flashing lights.

Edit: hyperlinked the video url to avoid being redundant.

These things really aren't meant to go outside. The slightest breeze will send them off into the next county (or parish).

Sure you can see the helicopter in the dark, but what about all those obstacles that don't glow in the dark. "Youz iz gonna crash!"

As if flying in the day wasn't hard enough. These do have 3 different frequencies, so it would be interesting flying them all at night with a group of people. Maybe enough to convince somebody that a UFO has landed.

$50 on the Zon

Froogle's best is $40

If these are anything like the choppers I bought from woot 6 months ago they can definitely take a beating. The propellers seem to be identical so I'd expect this to be insanely easy to fly.

As usual, the manufacturer (and Woot) are using the misleading acronym "RC" to imply "radio-controlled" when these actually use infrared light, which is inferior and can't be used in sunlight or where there are lots of wide obstacles. "IR Remote Controlled" is the accurate term.

Actually, I think the implication is "Remote Controlled" which coincidentally has the same initials.

In for two. I have a similar swan version. These are great for indoor use. Can't beat the price. Super easy to control. And yes these are IR not RC, but don't let that scare you away, especially if its your first chopper.

RC stands for Remote Control, I think it's fine.

However, I think that deal posted in Deals.Woot for the Syma S107 at Amazon.com is a better deal.

Syma is more robust and is a proven company (they kind of invented this category of toy). It's also cheaper $20.36, and free shipping with Prime. I just bought that this afternoon after seeing it on Deals.Woot...so I wouldn't getting this one.

EDIT: Since that was posted, Amazon dropped the price of the Syma to $20...I wonder why?

EDIT again: And now it's $20.25. I didn't know that RC helicopters are traded like stock...

I agree. When I see a computer advertised as a "PC", I don't assume it's supposed to be Politically Correct.

You'd have to convince me this is better than the Syma S107G. And that will take some doing.

A note on batteries.

For the lipo battery in the heli to last, there are a few simple things you should do. When you get it, charge it completely. Wait 10-15 minutes before flying, and stop at about 3 minutes. Wait 10-15 minutes, then charge it again. Wait 10-15 minutes, then you can begin flying it for 5 minutes or until it takes additional throttle to maintain a hover. Always wait at least 10 minutes after flying to put back on the charger, and always wait at least 10 minutes after it's charged to start flying.

If you do that, the battery will last much longer than if you don't.

What's the point of glow-in-the-dark when there's a bunch of lights on it?

Well If anyone can find out if you can fly more than one of these in the same area, would be in for a few.

Someone asked if more than one person can fly at a time. The ad says it has 3 frequencies so that you can fly with 3 different people on 3 different frequencies. more than that and you will get redundancy, and crashes

None of the helicopter-ish toys I've bought from Woot have worked. At all.

Regularguy2k

quality posts: 3 Private Messages Regularguy2k

Speaking from experience, what that means is they come in 3 different freqa, but what you get is random, so if you order 3 items you *might* get 3 items with the same freq. Or maybe not.

Wet-blanket time: saw this for the same price in the local department store here in Maine. Granted, it's a "discount" store. Still, woot!, you could do better.

Massive Overkill wrote:Some of you are probably getting sick of me coming into all these 3-channel IR coax sales, but once you try a 4 channel single blade micro, you'll be hooked, and wonder why you ever wasted your time with a boring 3 channel coax.

The WL Toys V911 is a 4 channel fixed pitch that comes witha 2.4 Ghz controller, 2 lipos with USB charger, and can fly outdoors in good conditions, and good in windy conditions with minor mods. You can get them for $42 shipped. It hovers just like a coax, but can do aggressive flying once you get bored of just hovering.

I wouldn't bash these 3 channel coax's so much if they came with a 2.4 Ghz controller instead of the crapy IR controller.

BTW, you can buy glow-in-the-dark canopies and blades for them as well.

But getting on woot! (generally) means you have a product that is not selling all that well or needs to be cleared out for the next rev.

Perhaps you are suggesting you want woot! to be more proactive about a woot!-launch? Haven't seen the little rocket ship in a while...

Not true, at least in my experience with micro helicopters.

There are three channels on the remote that you can select from, usually A, B, and C. You select one with the remote and "pair" your helicopter to that channel by moving the left stick up and down once. Then you're all set to fly on that channel. So, once person can 'pair' to A, one to B, and one to C.

So each copter can fly on one of three channels. (They may default back to a specific one upon power cycling - depends on the copter - but you can just re-pair it to the desired channel.)

Just make sure not to "pair" two helicopters at the same time (or while there is another copter within 'sight' of the IR controller)

Funny, I just got my steel series Syma last week. It's the best IR chopper I've flown yet. I am going to go out on a limb and say that these won't come close... And I paid less for mine too.

To each their own I guess

Heads up! The price has been dropped from $24.99 to $19.99. If you purchased it at $24.99, don't worry, our awesome Customer Service people will be contacting you - if you were on the fence, well then!

Time to buy!

My wife bought me one for Christmas, probably from Amazon. It's a great little heli and very durable (trust me in this) especially since I can't fly very well. Flying at night is very cool.

I'd say it's a screaming deal for $20. The only "Problem" I've noticed is the throttle is extremely touchy fresh off the charger, but after about 60 seconds it calms down and is a lot more controllable.

It's a two channel, so it always flies forward, unless you're in a death spiral and take out the wife's mother's 100yr old vase handed down through the generations.

Please tell me those missiles actually fire.

Because missiles that fire would be so cool, and mounting dummy missiles on a RC helicopter is just wrong.

This one is a 3-channel copter. (look at the box in the photo.)

Your 3 channels are:
Up/Down
Left/Right spin(rotate) (not to be confused with drift)
Forward/Backward

In the spirit of commenting on today's item and touching on today's poll about pets, I recommend that folks NOT attempt to (as I, unfortunately, DID) fly one of these things around an active dog who possesses a big enough snout/mouth to get around the craft, and perhaps who is also tall enough to grab it, say at couch height.

My dog's "bird dog" instincts kicked in when I tried flying a similar toy around the house, and no amount of humane reprimand was any match for her involuntary propensity to take it down! Needless to say, it doesn't fly the same as it once did. . . and by once, I actually mean one time, sadly.

All of this is not to discourage anyone from taking advantage of this fine Woot!, but rather to forewarn my fellow Wooters that your enjoyment of this product may last significantly longer if you isolate your pets from the area of flight activity. Good luck!

This is an INCREDIBLE price! 3 Channel Glow in Dark Helicopters are in stores for $39.99, and up! If anyone is looking for a gift at a great price, this is a really sharp price. I have a very similar one - these fly great and are really fun to play with! Our kids love them!

A silly question, but does this have a gyro? The description says a "gyro controller", and clearly (as the video notes) whoever wrote the instructions has a casual grip on English.

In the video the helicopter keeps spinning, but that could just be a mis-set trim rather than a lack of gyro.

The gyro is the black bar on top of the blades. It has weights in either end, keeping the heli stable. The spinning was probably, as you said, just mis-set trim.
