So my kid wants a t.v. in his room and honestly I do not like the idea. So my friend send me a link for a review of a projector. (it's a home review so the quality is not great)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=E65X9ye1YVM

It's for the AAxa p4, any ways, I thought this sounded like a good idea because that way I can put it in or take it out and it would serve as a reward system for him. Also I thought it would be good to use in the living room for like a family movie night. So I was wondering what your thoughts were on this and if you know anything on the brand that would be helpful. Thanks guys

I don't know anything about that specific projector, but I do like the thought of having an easy to move item (where a TV is not, really).

Ultimately though, if you're not comfortable with the idea at all, there's nothing saying you have to. Perhaps we can get some other parents to chime in on their thoughts. (And don't forget to check deals if you are shopping around, too!)

I'm just hanging out, really.

how old is the kid? personally, i would hesitate at enabling increased isolation from other fambly members if it's a young kid.

i didn't have a tv in my room growing up, and look where i am now! next parole board hearing is in just a few months, and i'm optimistic!

Point made! and yes we're all hoping for the best this time around for ya! My son is 11 and I agree the isolation shouldn't be in the cards. Which is why I liked the projector idea. I was thinking let him play video games in his room for 30-40 minutes and then take it out. I also thought about using it for the family to watch together, home videos pictures and stuff.

Dear god no. You will be very disappointed in this projector, and you will not be able to see it at all unless you cover the windows with blackout curtains. In general projectors just aren't a good choice, and that is why they are only used in niche cases. For the same price you can get a decent lightweight LCD TV that will be even easier to move in and out of the room.

Still single, can't imagine why.

Not to mention that their claims on their products don't even attempt to appear realistic. I accept that advertisements lie, but they don't need to insult my intelligence as well.

Limiting the time is easy...most lcds lack much control outside of the remote.

Even if the didn't, who would want to get up every time they wanted to use the TV? It isn't even worth it at that point.

TV isn't worth it in general.

My kids temporarily had the family TV (yes we only have 1) in their room while I was texturing the living room. Of course they thought it was great, what kid wouldn't. TV is a treat in our house and we just handed them a whole day of television candy! There have been tons and tons of studies showing detriments of having TV in the bedroom (any bedroom, but especially in children's rooms).

If you don't feel it's something your really want, don't bow to the pressure. You are your kid's parent, not your friend, and if your kid really feels left out, you just need to have a talk about it. Personally, I like having video games as a social time. They were a social time when I was growing up and always happened in the family room. Bedrooms are for sleeping, or getting away (we are a family of mostly introverts) into your own space with a book. Everything else is social in our house. It works for us. If your family room is low light, putting video games on the wall with a projector is still pretty cool (as long as no one walks in front of it.)

If you don't hook it up to any service, it's just a monitor. In fact, you can just get an HDCP enabled monitor (no tuner) for the gaming.

data point: We have 1 TV in the house, and the kids' computers are in a shared space vs. in their rooms.

But, you can't look at nature films in a shared room...

They can't, you are correct.
I, on the other hand, have a laptop for such things.

Sorry, just helping with the derailment.

I'll stay good...

I'm very glad that my kids aren't that into TV, even though we've been watching more than normal with all that's going on and the flooded yard.
